ICG worked to secure a vascular checks programme to screen for early signs of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
We established a campaigning coalition (National Obesity Forum, HEART UK, Primary Care Cardiovascular Society and Primary Care Diabetes Society) and worked with industry to develop an evidence base for the introduction of vascular checks.
Our engagement programme included a wide range of policy makers in the Department of Health, the NHS and Parliament. Using an integrated communications approach, the Target 1000 campaign mobilised 1000 policy influencers calling for a vascular checks programme. We also delivered a party conference programme to directly brief ministers on the campaign.
Ultimately, the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Health launched a £250m plan for NHS Health Checks for everyone aged 40 to 75. In 2011/2012, over a million people received the NHS Health Check.
In 2014/15, over 1.5million people were offered a health check, and over 700k people visited their GP or pharmacist for the check.
