Lobbyist-less Lobbying Scandals

As the media spotlight falls on lobbying once again, it is worth considering the potential implications of last week’s Panorama revelations for the lobbying industry. Regrettably, despite the fact that no lobbyist was involved in it, this story will most likely reinforce some of the negative prejudices the public may have about our profession. It should not. While Panorama’s investigation exposed shocking misconduct on the part of Patrick Mercer and unquestionably served the public interest, it revealed nothing about ‘lobbying practices’ used by professional lobbyists who appear to be the targets of much of the public outrage.
